What is a measured building survey?
Citing the description from RICS Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors:
“Measured surveys involve taking measurements of sites or buildings in order to produce accurate drawings to scale. They are usually specified to an agreed level of detail, to acceptable accuracy tolerances, scale, delivery times and costs”
Surveying equipment is utilized to gather data on every structural component, including walls, columns, and beams. Following this, elements such as doors and windows are incorporated along with floor levels, heights, and descriptive text to offer a clear and understandable representation of the building.
PROCESS OF A MEASURED SURVEY IN LONDON
- We begin our measured building survey process with a thorough assessment of your project requirements
- Our surveyors visit the site equipped with 3D laser scanners and other measured survey equipment

1.ONLINE QUOTE
Fill in our form or get in touch via email, providing the full property address along with any relevant details, such as the type of deliverables required and the scope of the survey. We'll get back to you with a quote in no time!

2. FIELD SURVEY
After accepting the quote, we’ll proceed with the field survey, which typically takes around 4 hours for residential properties. Our surveys are conducted to the highest UK standards using 3D laser scanning technology, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

3. DATA PROCESSING
The data collected on-site with our laser scanners requires post-processing. This step is called 'point cloud registration,' which usually takes one day, after which we can move on to the CAD phase of the project.

5. FINAL DELIVERY
After completing the final QA, we’ll share the draft drawings with our client for review and feedback. Once the client is fully satisfied and any comments are addressed, the invoice settlement will be required before we provide the final deliverables.

4. DELIVERABLES CREATION
Once the point cloud registration is complete, our CAD team can finally commence work on the drawings. This is the longest step of the process, and for residential properties, it usually takes 6-8 working days to complete the project.

6. POST DELIVERY SUPPORT
We are committed to providing excellent customer service and aim to deliver the best experience with our services. If you have any questions or need changes to the drawings, even months or years after delivery, please feel free to reach out to us. We will be more than happy to assist you!

Frequently Asked Questions
about Measured Building Surveys (FAQ)
Most frequently asked questions and our answers to them.
The time it takes to complete a measured building survey depends on the size and complexity of the building. For smaller residential properties, it could take a few hours, while larger commercial or historical buildings may require several days.
At Accurate MBS, we pride ourselves on our efficiency. Using cutting-edge equipment, we ensure quick turnaround times without compromising on quality.
Floor Plans
Detailed drawings of each floor, showing walls, doors, windows, and structural elements.
Can include annotations for measurements, room names, and usage.
Elevations
Front, side, and rear views of the building’s exterior.
Show the façade, including architectural details, materials, and window/door positions.
Sections
Vertical cut-throughs of the building to show interior structures.
Reveal floor levels, ceiling heights, and relationships between spaces.
Roof Plans
Show the layout of the roof structure, including slopes, ridges, and rooflights.
Includes materials and drainage systems (gutters, downspouts).
Reflected Ceiling Plans (RCPs)
Show the layout of the ceiling, including lighting, ventilation grilles, and ceiling-mounted fixtures.
Site Plans

Useful for planning applications and development projects.
Internal elevations
Internal elevations are vertical drawings that show the interior walls of a room from a straight-on view. They detail the arrangement and dimensions of:
- Windows and doors: size, position, and detailing.
- Wall finishes: materials and textures like paint or tiles.
- Built-in features: shelves, cabinetry, and fixtures.
- Architectural details: cornices, skirting boards, or paneling.
- Utilities: power outlets, light switches, etc.
- Furniture or equipment placement (if relevant).
3D Models
Using survey data, a 3D model can be generated, either as a CAD model or a more detailed BIM (Building Information Model).
- Helps visualise spatial relationships and detailed architectural elements.
- These drawings provide critical information for architects, engineers, builders, and planners, and can be used for purposes like renovations, extensions, or compliance with building regulations.
